Safety City Ribbon Cutting Celebration
First Abilene Federal Credit Union celebrated with a ribbon cutting on August 15, 2019 at the new replica building on display at the Melvin Martin Center for Children’s Safety (Safety City). The replica of First Abilene FCU replaces an outdated structure at the popular children’s center. Cost of the new construction was donated entirely by First Abilene FCU. It features the main building and a seating area with picnic tables for enjoyment of refreshments. Credit union employees dedicated many hours demoing the previous structure, painting and creating the new replica building.
“We are glad to support our community in educating children about safety, while offering a new space for visiting families and children,” said Megan Allred, interim Chief Executive Officer.
Safety City is operated by the Abilene Police Department, the Abilene Fire Department and the Texas Department of Public Safety. Construction began on the facility in 1976 with contributions from donors in Abilene and the Big Country on land provided by the City of Abilene. The program began in October of 1981. Today, operations are funded by the City of Abilene with assistance from the Friends of Safety City and generous donors. Approximately 5,000 children and 1,200 adults from 22 Texas counties receive programs offered by Safety City yearly.
