Card skimming is an ongoing and serious problem. Unfortunately, this type of fraud is the responsibility of the card Issuer. Long term, EMV will make skimming much more difficult and reduce the occurrence. Currently, we are seeing increased regional incidences of both financial institution and retail location skimming. 7-Eleven locations have been particularly hit hard in New York and California.
How can you help prevent Card Skimming? Be wary of card swipes that appear altered or have added devices. If you notice any of these things immediately report this to the management of the location in question. ALWAYS guard entry of their PIN from observers or cameras. Some devices have PIN pad enclosures, but most do not.
